About Morecambe : Sea Side Resort North West, UK
Morecambe is a seaside resort town in the North West of England which is known as the gateway to the Lake District. The town is currently thriving with many exciting investments being made which are transforming the town area of Morecambe Bay restoring what was once considered one of the best resort towns in Britain.
Morecambe is famous around the world or many reasons with the main being Eric Morecambe and the Midland Hotel. A statue of the late, great, Eric Morecambe (one half of comedy duo Morecambe and Wise) holds pride of place on the promenade and is generally surrounded by fans adopting the famous 'Bring me Sunshine' dance step.
The Midland Hotel is an art deco dream. Built in 1933 by the LMS (architect: Oliver Hill) it features sculptures by Eric Gill and attracted stars such as Coco Channel and George Formby, other rumoured guests are Winston Churchill, Wallis Simpson and Noel Coward. Since opening the Midland Hotel has been used as a base by the Navy during WWII to a film set in the 1980's for Poirot starring David Suchet, but until recently it has been closed and in a sad state. Urban Splash Development Group have restored the Grade II listed building (Summer 2008) and it is now back open and has attracted Deco fans from all over the world, resplendent in all it's glory once again. You can see more of Urban Splash's Midland Hotel here. There are currently plans to develop a section of the promenade to house a marina complex known as the Beachcomber from international designer Ian Hughes. The project planners envisage it to be a major and nationally significant attraction bringing more visitors and investment to the town. Exciting times for Morecambe indeed!
Another reason Morecambe attracts so many visitors are the sunsets. It is offered by the townsfolk that you will not see better anywhere else in the world. Indeed one infamous local favourite is that photographs taken of various sunsets in Morecambe were used to depict resorts in South Africa by travel companies. Whether that is true or not, anyone would be hard pressed to take a better shot of a sunset than one they could capture at Morecambe Bay, so don't forget to bring your camera!
Some regular entertainments Morecambe has to offer are; Cinema, Crown Green Bowling, Ten Pin Bowling, Sports Centres, Swimming Pools, Arcades, Outlet Stores, Boutique Shopping, Parks, Golf, fishing, outdoor Music Festivals in the Summer Months, concerts featuring internationally acclaimed artists at the Platform and the Morecambe Dome Venue, Guided Walks across the Bay (highly recommended), the list goes on and on.
